All about the Cake Pull (A great Southern Tradition)

Cake Pull’s are a fun Southern tradition that we see at many of our weddings (especially around New Orleans).  Usually, there are people in the audience who have no idea what a Cake Pull is, so let’s dive into the history a bit to shed a little light on this fun tradition.

The Cake Pull has roots in the Victorian Times.  Typically, sterling silver charms are placed inside the wedding (or bridal shower) cake.  Single ladies are given the opportunity to pull a charm from the cake (a ceremony called the “ribbon pull”) just before the cake is cut.  Each charm has a special meaning, such as:

Hot Air Balloon or Eiffel Tower – A life full of adventure and travel

Butterfly – Eternal Beauty

Star -  Make a wish, it will come true!

Anchor-  Adventure is around the corner

Four Leaf Clover – Good luck!

Heart -  New Love!

Fleur-de-Lis – Love and Prosperity

Kite- Something fun

Ring (the most anticipated charm)- Next to get married!

At the wedding I shot this weekend, I thought the same thing…I still don’t know what the tradition is! The bride was creative and thoughtful enough to put out a sheet that listed these…I love this tradition! :) Nice images, Mark.
