No doubt you’ve dreamt of what you are going to look like walking down the aisle, all eyes on you, breathtaking and flawless. To achieve this perfection one of the most important choices you’ll need to make for your wedding day will be your make up artist. Decisions are made about the flowers, the dress and the venue but as money starts getting tight many brides start cutting things from their budget and this is where the fate of the flawless bride that you’ve always pictured gets jeopardized! When all is said and done, after the flowers are dead, the food is gone and the dress is stored in your closet the one thing you will always see in your photos is your face. A professional make up artist will have the tools and experience to make you look gorgeous the photos that will last a lifetime.

Let’s assume that you’ve decided that you just can’t go without a make up artist, which is a choice that you’ll appreciate later and so will your photographer while editing. There are many factors to consider when choosing an make up artist but the top 5 characteristics to look for when booking an artist are experience, professionalism, personality, talent and price – in that order. What’s one worth without the other, not much. Here are a few tips from professional make up artist Tina Rodosta of Bridal Beauty Consulting on choosing a make up artist for your most memorable day.

Experience is key when looking for a wedding day make up artist. There are many different types of products and artists out there and someone who is skilled in “every day” make up technique may not be prepared for the field of wedding day beauty. This will be your most photographed day so you’ll need an artist who is experienced in applying make up that looks good in person, in photos and in video. This is a very tricky combo to master and usually takes years for artists to fully master all techniques.

Professionalism and personality should go without having to be mentioned but in a field of artists it’s something that a bride should pay close attention to. You may have hired the most talented make up artist but due to their lack of professionalism they don’t show up on your wedding day, what a disaster! Be sure to choose a professional make up artist rather than a hobby make up artist, this way you know that your big day will be taken care of. The time you’ll be spending with your make up artist prior to the wedding is the most stressful so personality is a big factor when booking. Not all make up artist are cut out for wedding work and some even avoid it while others enjoy being with the bride prior to her big day. “I love wedding days! The excitement of the bridal party, the beauty and the making of a flawless bride. It’s my favorite thing to turn a bride around to look in a mirror and see her glow! Seeing a bride’s excitement each time is what makes me fall in love with what I do every time.” says Tina Rodosta. Look for an artist that really loves working with brides, who other brides recommend and also consider what other wedding vendors have to say.

Once you have considered what friends and other vendors have recommended you can start booking consultations with make up artists to check out their talent level. These initial consultations usually are free and are different from a trial run and is a time for you to look at the artists portfolio. When booking a make up artist for your wedding it’s best to choose an experienced artist who has a variety of looks to show. Look for the ability of the artist who can work with many different skin types and tones as well as weddings at different times the of day. A red flag when booking an artist is a portfolio full of self portraits, though they have the ability to apply make up to themselves, this doesn’t mean they have the ability to address the skin issues of other people.

After you’ve booked your consultations, seen the work and met the artist its time to compare prices, the scariest part for brides. Prices vary among artists, include a variety of services and are based on the above mentioned qualities. Just as with any part of the wedding day budget you may have to decide what you are willing to compromise on and what you are not. Does more expensive mean better? Not always. Does the same hold true for cheaper is inexperienced? Take note of how each artist prices their services and if there are additional fees or if everything is up front. By comparing each artist and the services they offer you’ll be better able to decide who you will book for your wedding day.

Using these tips above will help you narrow down your selection of artists and feel confident in choosing the best person or team for you. Now you will be able to relax on your big day and feel confident that you will be the breath taking bride that you have always dreamed of and that you will be able to enjoy your day. It may seem like a lot of work to find the right artist for you but in the end when you are looking back photos years later you will be happy with your choice.
